
MedChi is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), through the ACCME’s State Medical Society (SMS) Recognition System, as an accreditor of organizations within the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. SMS in the Recognition System are required to run and maintain a system of accreditation equal to that of the National Accreditation System of the ACCME.
This accrediting is done through the MedChi Accredited Provider System (MAP System) under the guidance of the Continuing Medical Education Review Committee (CMERC). MedChi has been an ACCME SMS Recognized Accrediting organization since 1985. There are currently 48 organizations in the MAP System.
PURPOSES OF ACCREDITATION
The major purposes of accreditation are to ensure the quality and integrity of the continuing medical education activities of accredited providers by:
- Establishing criteria for evaluation of educational programs and their activities,
- Assessing whether accredited organizations meet and maintain standards,
- Promoting organizational self-assessment and improvement, and
- Recognizing excellence.
