The Center for the Employed Physician was established by the Center for a Healthy Maryland through a grant from The Physicians Foundation.  Through this project resources and educational programming were developed to assist physicians who are currently employed or are considering entering into an employment arrangement. To inform the content of the tools and services to be created, 442 Maryland physicians responded to a survey, giving feedback about their concerns regarding practicing medicine in an employed setting.  Physicians considering employment most requested a resource that would aid in contract negotiations, while physicians who are currently practicing in employed settings most requested current compensation models.  Both groups were also concerned about maintaining autonomy.

Merritt Hawkins, a division of AMN Healthcare, has just released its 2022 “Review of Physician and Advanced Practice Practitioner Recruiting Incentives”.  Now in its 29^th year, this Review is based on a representative sampling of over 2,600 recruiting engagements which tracks physician and AP starting salaries, signing bonuses, relocation allowances and related incentives.   Over the years the Review has provided benchmark data that many hospitals, medical groups and others now use to determine if their recruiting packages offer customary and competitive incentives. The new Review also indicates that demand for physicians, and the salaries they are offered, have rebounded dramatically from COVID-19.  Patient backlogs, an aging population, and widespread chronic medical conditions have created a strong surge in physician demand.

This report summarizes results of MedChi’s second survey of compensation levels of Maryland physicians (the first was completed in 2018).  The report includes 2020 compensation data as reported by Maryland physicians as well as data concerning the current practice patterns and metrics of Maryland physicians.  By capturing a broad range of information in the survey, MedChi intends to provide benchmark data Maryland physicians can use to evaluate their compensation levels relative to their peers and to compare their practice metrics, such as hours and days worked per week and weekends worked per year. The survey also indicates how Maryland physician compensation varies by physician age, gender, practice status and race. Data regarding the financial and professional impact on Maryland physicians of COVID-19 also is included in the survey.

White Paper Offers Physicians Job Assessment Tips Every year, thousands of medical residents coming  out of training go through the process of finding a job.
