Clarence Lam, MD, MPH, FACPM
State Senator, District 12 Howard and Anne Arundel Counties 

Dr. Clarence Lam is a state senator representing District 12 (Howard and Anne Arundel Counties) in the Maryland General Assembly, where he serves on the Senate Finance Committee and the Executive Nominations Committee. He chairs the Howard County Delegation, the Joint Committee on Audits and Evaluations, and the Joint Committee on Fair Practices and State Personnel Oversight. He is also a member of the Anne Arundel County Delegation and is the chair emeritus of the Asian American & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. He is currently the only physician and the only Asian American legislator in the Senate of Maryland. In October 2023, Senate President Fergus on appointed him to become the first Asian American chair or vice chair of a Senate committee. He previously served in the Maryland General Assembly as a state delegate from 2015-2019.

Dr. Lam serves on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management. He leads the school’s preventive medicine residency program as its program director and practices clinically as the medical director of occupational medicine at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. He is board certified in preventive medicine and occupational medicine.

For two years beginning in March 2020, he served as the interim director for Occupational Health Services and the Department of Health, Safety, and Environment for Johns Hopkins Medicine and University where he was responsible for the health and wellbeing of over 50,000 employees in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Florida throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.


Kimberly Horvath, JD
Senior Attorney, American Medical Association

Kimberly Horvath, JD is a senior attorney in the Advocacy Resource Center at the American Medical Association where she leads multifaceted advocacy campaigns across the 50 states on top level healthcare issues, including scope of practice, telehealth, physician-led team-based care, physician licensure, graduate medical education, physician workforce, augmented intelligence and truth in advertising. Kim works in strong collaboration with the 50 state medical associations and national medical specialty associations across the country to help shape and inform state laws, regulations, and policies in support of patients and physicians. Kim has advocated on behalf of physicians and patients before national policy making organizations, state legislatures and state regulators.

 

 


Michael Suk, MD, JD, MPH, MBA
Chair, Board of Trustees American Medical Association

An active and engaged leader from his earliest days in organized medicine, Dr. Suk was the first medical student and first Asian-American elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 1994. In addition, he has served on the AMA Council on Medical Service and as chair of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section where he led AMA efforts to create governance guidelines on resident work hours. In 2016, to help spearhead advocacy for the medical profession in Washington, D.C., Dr. Suk was appointed to the board of directors of the American Medical Political Action Committee. Additionally, reflecting his passion and expertise in the field of performance excellence, quality and safety, Dr. Suk was selected to the Board of Commissioners at the Joint Commission and currently serves as vice chair.

Dr. Suk is professor and chair of the Musculoskeletal Institute and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the renowned Geisinger Health System based in Danville, Penn. Additionally, he serves as chief physician officer of Geisinger System Services, where he provides clinical leadership over the system’s $1.5B enterprise supply chain and pharmacy division.

Dr. Suk, who was selected as a White House Fellow under President George W. Bush in 2003 and as a Baldrige Executive Fellow in 2017, is widely sought after for his expertise in new models for health care payment and delivery, physician engagement, and leadership. In 2018, for example, he disrupted the dialogue on value-based care by developing and offering the world’s first “lifetime warranty” for total joint replacement. Dr. Suk is also one of the nation’s leading clinical voices for well-being through connections with nature, outdoor recreation and unstructured play.

He received a BA in African American history from Carleton College before simultaneously completing an MD at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and a JD/MPH with special certification in health care law at Boston University School of Law and School of Public Health. He later completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, N.Y., and his fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. In addition, Dr. Suk completed his MBA at the University of Scranton.

Dr. Suk enjoys coaching innovative, entrepreneurial leaders seeking to cross traditional boundaries, all activities in the great outdoors, travelling with his family and playing golf and tennis. Dr. Suk and his wife, Jennifer, have three children.


David Sharp
Director of the Center for Health Information Technology and Innovative Care Delivery, Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC)

David Sharp is the Director of the Center for Health Information Technology and Innovative Care Delivery at the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC). With nearly 34 years of experience in the health care field, he has dedicated approximately 27 years to MHCC and its predecessor organization. His extensive background enables him to advance the use of health information technology (health IT) throughout the State, collaborate on advanced payment models that encourage high-quality, cost-efficient care, and analyze data to inform policymaking, public health, and foster transparency. By building consensus among stakeholders, David has effectively promoted strategies to advance health equity.

A central aspect of David's role involves expanding the use of electronic health information through his work with the State Designated Health Information Exchange, about 16 electronic health record system vendors, and 32 electronic health networks. In addition, developing telehealth initiatives to expand geographic reach and enhance access to care. For nearly 22 years, David served as a Commissioner on the Electronic Health Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) contributing to the development of industry standards around privacy and security, resulting in the accreditation of more than 100 organizations. He has collaborated with the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology for nearly two decades to ensure that Maryland's health IT framework aligns with federal priorities.

Maryland is at the forefront of developing innovative care delivery models that align with national health care reform goals. David is involved in establishing implementable standards and principles to support new care delivery models. His work contributes to reengineering the existing systems utilized by health care providers. David's data-focused approach has enhanced policy efforts for the adoption of value-based care.


Padmini Ranasinghe, M.D., MPH, MedChi President Elect 

Padmini Ranasinghe, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her medical education at the Colombo Medical Faculty in Sri Lanka, followed by a residency in combined Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine, along with an MPH at the Yale School of Public Health. Dr. Ranasinghe is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM).

At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ranasinghe serves as a clinician, educator, and researcher. She is the Co-Director of Education in the Division of Hospital Medicine, where she teaches and mentors medical students, residents, and public health students. Her research interests include the health and wellness of trainees and practicing physicians, disaster medicine, global health topics such as climate and health, chronic disease prevention, and health informatics.

Nationally, Dr. Ranasinghe has been active in the American Medical Association (AMA). She chaired the AMA-International Medical Graduate Section in 2013-14, representing 25% of all practicing physicians in the United States. In 2018, she was elected to the Council on Science and Public Health (CSAPH) by the AMA House of Delegates, where she currently serves as Vice Chair.

In Maryland, Dr. Ranasinghe is a past president of the Baltimore City Medical Society. At the Maryland State Medical Society MedChi, she has been a member of the Board of Trustees, Treasurer, and is now the President-Elect, representing physicians across Maryland. She also serves on the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) Total Cost of Care Group.

During her tenure as President of MedChi, Dr. Ranasinghe will focus on the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence and related technologies in healthcare. She emphasizes the importance of physicians maintaining a strong understanding of these domains to stay relevant in ongoing conversations. Recently, she co-chaired the international conference Asia Tech 2024 in Indonesia, bringing together healthcare stakeholders from around the world to explore emerging opportunities and potential issues related to the rise of AI globally.
