HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10
CMS is pushing to meet its original timelines for the transition to HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10. January 1, 2012 is the deadline for switching to the HIPAA 5010 transaction set.
Starting January 1, 2012, Maryland Medicaid and CMS will only accept claims with HIPAA 5010 transaction codes. As of this date, all claims submitted in HIPAA 4010A1 will be denied.
CMS is urging all physicians to begin testing transactions in the new 5010 format now to avoid possible delays in payment. Testing transactions now will allow you to address potential issues before the deadline and avoid the testing rush expected at the end of the year. Click here for more information on how to begin 5010 preparation and testing.
Unlike HIPAA 4010A1, Version 5010 supports the use of ICD-10 codes. Version 5010 needs to be in place before the ICD-10 diagnostic code set can be implemented. October 1, 2013 is the deadline for switching to the ICD-10 diagnostic code set. CMS has posted a series of timelines and widgets to help physicians prepare for the transitions.
