As part of a statewide effort to educate healthcare providers about rabies, the  Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has recently released an online training course about rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). CME/CE credit is available to any physician, nurse, pharmacist, or veterinarian who takes the course.  There is no cost to participate or to receive CME/CE credit.
 
Learning objectives cover the factors that should be considered when assessing a person for rabies virus exposure, the fundamentals of rabies immune globulin and rabies vaccine administration, and appropriate actions to take when managing a situation in which PEP has been administered in a manner contrary to Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines. The epidemiology of animal and human rabies in the U.S. is also covered in depth. Although the content has a Maryland emphasis, it is applicable to national audience.  Any healthcare provider or public health professional who may be called upon to evaluate or manage a patient for rabies exposure is encouraged to take the course.
