Teaming up with our patients works! That’s why MedChi is pleased to share with you this kit to help you and your patients reform our health care system. The materials found here have been sent to physicians and patients across the state.  Doctors, use these tools in your office to help you inform your patients and inspire them to act. Teamwork with patients starts with a conversation, builds on the facts, and—multiplied thousands of times—it creates a movement of interest and concern that can produce change.

Current changes in Maryland’s troubled medical liability environment are proof. Physicians and patients together created the political will in Annapolis to take, at least, beginning steps toward reform. Perhaps more importantly, the liability environment may be changing. The number of new malpractice cases has fallen dramatically; some insurance rates have stabilized—unacceptably, more than 70% higher than 3 years ago—and defense lawyers report that juries are increasingly receptive to physicians’ stories in court. It’s early and uncertain, but the climate may be changing because the public—our patients—are educated.

This is not happening by chance; physicians and patients, led by MedChi’s members are making it happen. Your membership makes it happen. That’s the force of our thousands of members and our millions of patients, which only MedChi can mobilize. It is also the force that supports our legislative, legal and other fights against payer abuses.

About MedChi

Calendar of Events for Maryland's Medical Community

Our patients need to know that their ability to obtain quality physician care when and where they need it is threatened by Maryland’s high-risk, high-cost cost, low-reimbursement environment. They need to know that medical lawsuits continue to terrorize medicine and drive out quality physicians. They need to know that business isn’t good for Maryland physicians; that we cannot recruit and retain quality doctors and are losing specialists and primary care physicians alike, in part because state law helps giant HMOs force “take it or leave it” deals on doctors. They need to help persuade policy makers to listen to what doctors are saying. Hence, our theme: What does your doctor say?

MedChi’s agenda is to achieve system reform and health improvement through physician leadership. Your leadership starts with your membership. Make sure you renew your membership, and talk to your colleagues to be sure they are members, too.

We invite you join us in directing the future of our MedChi, and welcome your comments and questions. Thank you for your leadership.
