2007 Changes in HIV/AIDS Reporting Requirements

The 2007 Changes in HIV/AIDS Reporting Requirements Physician Toolkit is in the Mail!

MedChi's Center for a Healthy Maryland worked in close collaboration with the Maryland AIDS Administration to produce CHANGES IN HIV/AIDS REPORTING REQUIREMENTS, which is being mailed out to all physicians in the state.

The 2007 HIV/AIDS Reporting Act requires name-based reporting of HIV cases, and allows the state health department to take the necessary steps to ensure that Maryland will continue to be eligible to receive federal funds for HIV/AIDS services.

The new law contains two significant changes for physicians. In addition to the existing requirement to report patients diagnosed with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) to the health department, physicians must now also report all patients diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. In addition, physicians are now also required to report to the health department newborn infants born to HIV-infected mothers, and therefore exposed to HIV infection.
